Experienced Chicago Environmental Attorney Interviewed by American Bar Association

Attorney Dave Scriven-Young describes his accomplished environmental practice and provides tips to young attorneys for American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s Career Development Initiative.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 2, 2011 – To be successful, environmental lawyers must be flexible and willing to take on different kinds of matters, including litigating cases, negotiating corporate transactions, and helping clients comply with environmental statutes and regulations.

“An environmental law practice involves legal and scientific problems,” says Dave Scriven-Young, an environmental attorney in the Chicago office of Peckar & Abramson, P.C., and author of the Illinois Environmental Law Blog.  “Those problems can include litigation, transactional work, and counseling clients to comply with the complex regulatory and statutory schemes that seek to control pollution, remediate contaminated property, and conserve and manage natural resources.”  Scriven-Young made these comments in an interview for the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s Career Development Initiative.

In the interview, Scriven-Young says that he enjoys practicing environmental law because it is both interesting and complicated: “One of the most interesting matters that I have worked on was a series of class and individual actions against a manufacturing client that was accused, along with other manufacturers in a large industrial park, of contaminating well water.  The twist was that in a corporate deal, my client’s predecessor company had promised to indemnify my client for certain environmental problems that existed during a certain period of time.”  Scriven-Young’s team obtained judgments against the predecessor company for the attorney’s fees that his client incurred and settlements paid in the underlying class and individual actions.

His top tip for young lawyers seeking to enter this area of the law is to get involved with legal and professional organizations.  For example, Scriven-Young serves as liaison to the Task Force on Policy and Coordination in the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, and he co-chairs the Environmental Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association Young Lawyers Section.  Because many of his clients are manufacturers, Scriven-Young is also an active member of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association.  To read the entire interview, go to: http://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/administrative/young_lawyers/environmental_law.pdf.

Scriven-Young is next scheduled to give a presentation entitled “How Businesses Can Take Advantage of U.S. EPA’s Audit Policy” on December 22 in Chicago, IL sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association.
