The big environmental story on Friday was the announcement that more than 140,000 acres of land on Chicago’s Southeast Side that has served as an environmental dumping ground would be transformed into recreational and open space, under the “Millennium Reserve Initiative”. This ambitious project is a victory for environmentalists who have sought the expansion of open space projects in the Chicagoland area. It will turn brownfields into places that the public can enjoy–and that is definitely a good thing.
